Stained Concrete

For a variety of surfaces indoors and out, including floors, patios, driveways, walkways, and more, stained concrete has become a top choice. With so many gorgeous color choices, you have the ability to create rich and luxurious floors or a more rustic and rugged outdoor surface. No matter what, the results with staining are extraordinary.

Unlike other options that look opaque and solid, almost as if painted, stain permeates concrete, creating a more translucent appearance. Of course, based on the technique used for application, the surface itself, and your desired aesthetic, the actual tone of stained concrete will be unique.

There are a number of reasons for choosing stained concrete as the number one solution for both indoor and outdoor surfaces. As a prime example, stained concrete is extremely easy to clean and maintain. For that reason, this is an excellent choice for areas with high traffic and exposure to environmental elements.

Stains used for concrete floors are broken down into two categories.

  • Acid-Based Stains – Typically, these stains are a mixture of acid-soluble metallic salts, hydrochloric acid, and water. The colored concrete stain penetrates the concrete surface while creating a chemical reaction with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete material. As a result, the surface is slightly etched and the metallic salts penetrate easily. After reacting, this acid stain color is a permanent component of the concrete, so there is no risk of peeling, chipping, or fading.
  • Water-Based Stains – As with acid-based stains, these can be applied to an old or new integrally colored or plain concrete surface. As a blend of pigments and polymers, these stained concrete colors are permanent thanks to penetration. You will also discover a much broader spectrum of colors, which are both opaque and translucent.

Since stain penetrates the surface of the concrete, indoor and outdoor concrete surfaces become highly resistant to wear and tear. In addition, stained outdoor concrete reflects harsh UV rays. Simply put, stained concrete is an ideal solution for both indoor and outdoor applications, whether vertical or horizontal.

Regardless of which type of stained concrete colors you prefer, it is important to hire a professional with years of experience and expertise specific to acid- and water-based concrete stains.
